Official opening of the Halton Curve line

The Halton Curve is a short section of railway track which connects the North Wales Coast Line to the West Coast Main Line. It was opened in 1873 to provide a direct link between the industrial areas of north Wales, south Lancashire and Merseyside.

With the decline of heavy industry in the first half of the 20th century, the line saw a reduction in freight traffic, and passenger services were withdrawn in the 1970s.

The first rail services directly linking North Wales, Cheshire and Liverpool have started running for the first time in more than 40 years.

With hourly trains running to Liverpool, North Walians can leave the car at home, jump on a train and travel to John Lennon Airport in less than two hours.

Welsh Government Transport Minister Ken Skates said:

“As a result of the reopening of the Halton Curve Transport for Wales have been able to launch the direct service, providing a major economic boost for the region. “There have always been close links between North Wales and Liverpool, and the new direct train service is great news for both regions. It strengthens links with our cross border neighbours, creating important economic and social opportunities.  It is also a boost to the regional tourism sector, attracting more visitors to Wales, and an improved link with John Lennon Airport can only help with this.”
